Six Degrees of Dilla

Soulshock & Karlin, J. Dilla, and Mr. Bobby Caldwell.

Soulshock & Karlin, J. Dilla, and Mr. Bobby Caldwell.

As you probably already know, when the late Lesane Parish Crooks was murdered in Las Vegas on Friday the 13th of September 1996 (still unsolved, btw), he left behind a hoard of unreleased tracks- many of which still remain unreleased while others have thankfully leaked on to the net.

The unreleased tracks finding their way onto the net are swell because they give us a chance to hear the songs as Mr. Shakur heard them and/or planned to release them.  Many of the posthumous retail releases of his work unfortunately contain pairings with artist-of-the-month guest-appearances and producer re-workings in attempt to appeal to the Hip Hop market they are being released to rather than the era 2Pac recorded them in.

That ain't always a bad thing though.

Question 14 – Muslim Lesson 2

Jay ElectRamadaan Muhammad Aslaamica RasoulAllah Supana Watallah, Lord Jamar, and Grand Puba

Jay ElectRamadaan Muhammad Aslaamica RasoulAllah Supana Watallah, Lord Jamar, and Grand Puba (Missing: Sadat X).

Now here's some food for thought
Many fought for the sport
And the black man still comes up short
It's time to motivate, build and elevate
Blind deaf and dumb we've got to change their mind-state
So I dip dip diver
Civilize a 85er

Gotta let him know the devil's a conniver
This is the plan from the brother-man
From the motherland now it's time to take a stand
I keep to striving to do my duty to awaken
To the universal family I say a "salaam alakum,"
- Grand Puba, on Brand Nubian's "Wake Up."

Brand Nubian 'Wake Up (Reprise In The Sunshine)'

... I used to get dizzy spells and hear a little ring-
the voice of an Angel telling me my name,
telling me that one day I'mma be a great man,
transforming with TheMegatronDon spittin' out flames,
eatin' wack rappers alive spittin' out chains.
I ain't believe it then, nigga- I was homeless,
fightin', shootin' dice, smokin' weed on the corners,
trynna find the meaning of life in a Corona,
'til the 5 percenters rolled up on a nigga and informed him-
"You either build or destroy... where you come from?"
"The Magnolia projects in the 3rd ward slum,"
"Hmmm. It's quite amazing that you rhyme how you do,
and how you shine like you grew up in a shrine in Peru,"
Question 14, Muslim Lesson 2: Dip Diver, Civilize a 85er,
I make the Devil hit his knees and say the Our Father,
Abracadabra! You rocking with the true and living...

Mystical Enchanting Branson

Branson B.

The Famous Branson B.

In my post yesterday I quoted some Biggie lyrics from his appearance on Tracy Lee's record "Keep Your Hands High,"

..Me and my nigga Lance
took Kim's and Cease's advance
bought ten bricks,
four pounds of weed plants
from Branson
now we lamping...

If you've been listening Hip Hoppers, this probably isn't the first time that you've heard an emcee speak about "Branson."
